What Is Psychiatric Care?

Here at SD Wellness Group, our psychiatry services focus on medication-assisted treatment (MAT) for those dealing with substance use or mental health conditions.

MAT is an evidence-based approach that uses both behavioral therapies and medication to better manage withdrawal symptoms and cravings while reducing the likelihood of relapse.
We offer the following harm-reducing MAT services:
- Suboxone and Subutex: Available as tablets or dissolvable films, these medications help with opioid withdrawal.
- Sublocade: A once-a-month injection for those struggling with opioid dependence.
- Vivitrol injections and Naltrexone tablets: Medications that help prevent relapse by blocking the effects of opioids.
- Antabuse and Campral: Primarily used for alcohol use disorder to support sobriety and reduce cravings.
It’s important to note that we are not a methadone provider.
Additionally, we do not offer injections on-site. However, the pharmacy located next door to our clinic can administer any injections we prescribe.

Psychiatry vs. Therapy: Which Is Right for You?
When seeking help for mental health or substance use disorders, understanding how psychiatry differs from therapy can help determine which approach is right for you.
Psychiatry: A Medical Approach
Psychiatrists are medical doctors who can prescribe medications and develop comprehensive treatment plans that may include:
- Medication management
- Lifestyle modifications
- Therapy recommendations
Generally speaking, psychiatry is well suited for those dealing with severe depression, anxiety, neurodevelopmental disorders, bipolar, or substance use disorders that require medication-assisted treatment.
Therapy: A Behavioral Approach
Therapists provide talk therapy services that can help work through emotional and behavioral difficulties.
Therefore, therapy is typically ideal for those who want a safe space to explore their thoughts and emotions, are experiencing stress, relationship issues or major life events, could benefit from trauma-focused therapy, or prefer an approach that doesn’t involve medication.
Finding the Most Effective Approach for You
Mental health is not black and white; neither is a treatment course. Oftentimes, we recommend a combination of our psychiatry and therapy services.
Once we've connected with you and reviewed your history, we'll create a personalized plan that will maximize your results and relief.
